Thanks for this, very much appreciated. Weird that HTTPRL didn't come up when I was doing my searches. Seems very interesting. Webclient seems so as well, looks like it's aiming for something more complex than CHR (at least at this stage), which is currently intended just to be a simple replacement for drupal_http_request in a way that both input and output are pretty much identical.

Will definitely be happy to come around and have a say about #64866: Pluggable architecture for drupal_http_request()
