Problem/Motivation
There is an imminent g.d.o / website / project namespace change in discussion that also includes an IRC channel.
#drupal-ladder is the suggested name change for the existing #learndrupal IRC channel (to accompany the change from "Learn drupal" g.d.o group to "Drupal ladder", and similar website change from learndrupal.org to drupal-ladder.org, etc). See Name of this group and in particular these comments by add1sun (about almost certain confusion with the new drupal.org/learn-drupal), further discussions about what the new name should be - and more thoughtful comments by others in the group.
Proposed resolution
Overall, change the names consistently from "learn drupal" to "drupal ladder", so there will be less confusion between getting support, and bringing in new contributors to Drupal - the latter is the goal of the project (get it, latter/ladder?… yeah).
For IRC, I just did all the steps from Adding a new IRC channel (all but #8 of course… looking forward to that once this is set!)
Unless there are any strong objections (especially from @bryanhirsch?, since he spearheaded #learndrupal & learndrupal.org… but also the Ladder project!), we should go ahead and rip off the namespace bandaid sooner than later.
Remaining tasks
- Please add #drupal-ladder to the list at http://drupal.org/irc - Thanks!
- There are other remaining tasks but those can be tracked elsewhere ^…^

bryanhirsch commentedI agree with @scottrigby. Let's rip off the bandaid.
Can someone please help us add #drupal-ladder to the list at http://drupal.org/irc? Thanks!

jhodgdonTo get the channel added, please supply a description consistent with others on the IRC channels page. Thanks.
jhodgdonAlso, please clarify: is the learn-drupal channel supposed to be deleted now? Or do you want a note added to that saying the new name is drupal-ladder?
Also... can I just say that #learn-drupal actually makes sense to me, while #drupal-ladder is not obvious to someone who is not part of the initiative and just wants to learn Drupal. If this channel is meant for learners (as opposed to being a discussion channel for organizers), I would give this change a second thought...

scottrigbyHi @jhodgdon,
That's exactly the problem… while the site is for learning drupal (for new contributors), the IRC channel and g.d.o group are not for learners, but for people to help organize the project.
Remember when contribution in #drupal moved to #drupal-contribute? It's a lot like that, but for the Ladder project. I think part of the confusion is the Boston initiative > Learn Drupal > Ladder project is meant to *help* bring new contributors into Drupal (that's what the website is for). However, that project still needs to be organized, and that's what the IRC channel and g.d.o group is for.
Re-naming is meant to help ease the natural confusion that came about when the IRC channel and g.d.o group were called "learn drupal", which seemed to newcomers (and clearly to anyone initially!) to be an invitation to literally learn drupal rather than organize the site and related events.
This comment might help clarify too…

jhodgdonGreat. Please write a short description of the channel and I will add it to the list on the /irc page.
scottrigbyHow about:
jhodgdonGrammar typos... "for to help with"... and do you really need to have the "The goal of this group" sentence in there? wouldn't that be best covered by the .org web site -- it doesn't seem to be necessary to the IRC channel description?
scottrigbyOh right… how's this (currently the topic in that channel):
silverwing commentedJust to make it more succinct, how about:
scottrigbywe may need a publishing workflow soon ;)
@silverwing: that sounds better! except IMO the g.d.o group should be linked (especially if folks want to get involved with the initiative, since that's where asynchronous discussion happens).

BrockBoland commentedI've been talking to scottrigby in IRC, and in the interest of keeping it short and sweet like the other descriptions on the channel list, we agreed on this:
We don't need to explain too much: people can follow the link to the group to find out more about it.

silverwing commentedAdded #11!
scottrigbywe just updated the topic in that channel to this. Nice!
@jhodgdon++ for pointing out the unnecessary wordiness (i must have had verbose mode enabled!)…
@silverwing++ for shortening it
@BrockBoland++ for nailing it

BrockBoland commentedFantastic, thanks silverwing!
