When a person writes their url in a profile with just 'www.xyz.com' the link created in their profile opens a "http://www.drupalsite.com/user/www.xyz.com' and posts an access denied. Any ideas how I can make it open a new window or at least go to the right site even if they don't add the 'http://'?

I would add http:// as the default text; hopefully users will get the message that way.
