Removed article summary still shows up as an empty summary

A body field, set up to be displayed as a summary or trimmed version, will display the summary field if this exists, else it will trim the body to XX chars.

If you enter a summary, save, then delete it (empty the field), the views always serves an empty summary instead of the trimmed body.
