I have reviewed your history and AFAICT, your previous account has been blocked due to repeated aggressive criticism towards respected members of drupal.org who were giving you a lot of valuable time.

But hey - we haven't blocked your IP and you have a new account. Feel free to take a deep breath and start again.

Definitely closed. Thanks.

Uh, I would appreciate my former account restored, please. How was I to know they were "holier than thou" supreme users who dare not receive criticism upon their "holy" name? <eyeroll> Gimme a freakin' break. Way to even give a warning that one's account will be blocked for acting that way towards certain users (whatever). The dictatoriality here is almost as bad as on Wikipedia...

That's exactly why you were blocked. Anyone can criticize anyone in the Drupal community. There are two keys to doing it right: the first is use constructive criticism, and the second is to not be rude. You seem to have failed both. That is the reason you were blocked. Do you think " Gimme a freakin' break" is nice? You are well on your way to getting your other account blocked as well.

Re-reading your comment, listen to sime:

But hey - we haven't blocked your IP and you have a new account. Feel free to take a deep breath and start again.

Lemme propose something. Do literally what he said. Step away from the computer for 5 minutes. Take a deep breath. Enjoy the fresh air. Now come back and start being a little less rude, and read this next part. I am afraid you have blown it a second time. I am the kind of person who likes to consider other people. I don't want you to be excluded from the Drupal community once and for all. I want you to become a successful Drupalite, making your way around the forums, asking successful question, and things like that. However, as much as the Drupal community wants everyone to use Drupal, when it comes down to it, we don't like people who are rude to post here, or be a part of the community at all. That is why your first account has been blocked. Pretty much everything in your last comment, from the tone you set, to the words you say, shows that you are trying to be rude.
Now read this famous Drupalism:

Criticisms and requests for improvements are perfectly acceptable; demands for improvements without taking the time to get into the system to understand why things are get ignored. Repeated demands get you banned. This is a community that thrives on contributions; demands without contributions are not tolerated

Um, for what? God damn. If you can't take a little harshness, you shouldn't exist. The real world isn't full of niceties and pleasantness; it's a bitch--a real bitch. Regardless, I'm here to figure out Drupal enough to do what I want. Unfortunately, Drupal is very frustrating and my frustration with it spills over to this website, the IRC channel, etc. Sorry, but I'm naturally an expressive person and, when supressed, I only get worse, holding it in, and snap when it becomes too much to bear. (If you think I've been harsh so far, you haven't see anything yet.) I don't appreciate being repressed--especially when I'm trying to learn something (like Drupal). My previous account had various posts/issues I was tracking so I would appreciate having access to it restored...

#8

Eep - July 17, 2007 - 04:46

So where have I repeatedly demanded anything enough to warrant a ban? As I see it, my other account was banned out of spite for "irreverance" to some "holier-than-thou" members. What kind of elitist bullshit is that? What you deem "rude" I call "realistic". Again, reality isn't full of daisies and petunas; it's got roses--with thorns that can prick you real good if you're not careful. Consider me a thorn necessary to ensure the rose remains as beautiful as it is.

If you can't take a little harshness, you shouldn't exist.

Two things wrong with that: a) rude, non-constructive criticism... b) I find something wrong with the little part. Many people are finding you to be very harsh.

Title:can't access my account» Realistic vs. Rude

"What kind of elitist bullshit is that? What you deem 'rude' I call 'realistic'."

-Did you have to use the word "bullshit" in that sentence? Does that make your criticism more realistic? You don't have to be rude to make your criticisms heard (just the opposite, in fact).

Reality: Software development teams, especially distributed ones, require good communications skills to be productive. If you want to participate on this particular team (especially if it's just to get support), that's a critical requirement.

A few people were offended by your comment. No one's flamed you. Why?

They're not suppressing their criticisms, or being unrealistic. They're trying to figure out how to communicate effectively. Sometimes, that means not being rude even when you're tempted to be, whether it's here or on IRC.

Take care,

Dave.

The real world isn't full of niceties and pleasantness; it's a bitch--a real bitch.

This isn't the real world, this is an online community. In online communities, if you do not observe the customs of the community, you are excluded from the community. It is that simple.

I take it you want to be banned again. As merlinofchaos said, this is an online community, not the real world. In online communities, if people don't want to play by the rules, they get banned. I have a feeling that's going to happen to you quite soon.

Ok, I followed your link to the exchange with merlinofchaos:

You said: I found a bug.

He said: It's not a bug, it's there for a reason, but if you'd like to improve things, feel free to contribute some code.

You said: No, here's a link to Google, now take care of it.

He said: No, you don't get why this is difficult, if you want to fix things, learn php / MySQL and fix it.

You said: No, I linked you to Google, now fix it.

...and so on.

The reason this is frustrating is that you sound like you're demanding that merlinofchaos fix your issue. Why would he? Why should he follow a link to Google, look at code examples, and then roll a new version of Views? You're entitled to nothing from this community except what people volunteer to give you; if you would like see a new feature added (or a bug fixed) then you're free to fix it, or pay a developer to fix it. That's how social source works. Assuming you're an awesome programmer (I'm not) who's way better than merlinofchaos, and you totally see how to do this in a way that he doesn't, you're free to write some code and submit it.

Otherwise, you're wasting people's time, and they're getting mad at you. No one asked you to suck up; they asked you to try to get along.

Take care,

Dave.

Not quite, dmitrig01. In the real world, if the rules are assinine, they're opposed, revolted against, and eventually changed to reflect reality. I don't want to be be banned, but I don't want to fall in-line with a system that's biased and elitist either, which I will fight against any day of the week (as I have in the past).

Dave, not quite. My reply to the initial post was quite passive and neutral. Then, merlin chimed in with his sarcastic/cynical remark (after having read my replies in other threads, no doubt, to which he had already formed a negative judgement about me) of "We didn't set these fields not sortable randomly just to annoy you...", which only adds to my frustration in dealing with Drupal's (and its modules') annoyances. Then, I question merlin on the actual difficulty of implementing all-field sorting, and he replies with more cynicism/sarcasm and more attacks "you give me some lip" and pompousness with his holier-than-thou attitude of, basically, "I know why it happens and am not going to bother explain it to you, so nyah". This only provokes me more, you see, because I can't stand being given the run-around/brush-off--oh no, not me. When I give client-side table sorting scripts to show he's wrong, he only gets madder, predictably, and calls me a moron. Wee.

I don't demand things be fixed, but I question why they are they way they are, and when given some brush-off, move-along kind of answer, I don't accept that and then I start demanding/insisting on the real truth/reason. I don't get along with pompous people who think they're above anyone, dig? I don't care if they're "elite" programmers or even god itself (assuming it even exists). I'm here to learn to do what I want to do with Drupal, not play social niceties games with the fragile-egoed, low-self-esteemed native folk. Life's tough; get a freakin' helmet.

You have an interesting way of reading this.

1) Prior to that issue, I'd never seen your name before.

2): Here is what you said in that issue:
In Views 5.x-1.6-beta5 (dunno about 4.7x-1.5), not all fields are sortable, annoyingly. This is followed up by a factually inaccurate statement, where you claim something that can't possibly be true.

I respond:
Fields are set to not sortable if the field isn't a simple field that can be easily sorted. We didn't set these fields not sortable randomly just to annoy you; we did so because they can't easily be sorted.

Cynical and snarky? Perhaps. But I was responding to exactly what you said.

Then you answer with "What's so difficult about sorting a table column?"

It's at this point that I get truly annoyed with you, because I don't have the time to teach you what Views does. If you don't know what it does, you shouldn't be in the issue queue. And your phrasing was very much showing attitude. It's this point that still sticks out and pisses me off. You continue to poke and prod at this issue without bothering to get any understanding of what the issue is here. It is not my job to educate you. The code is there, and it is available.

Yet you keep making demands about client side sorting with javascript. Let me go back to my very first comment: Views just uses the default Drupal tablesort code, so any ajax/javascript feature requests go there. You chose to ignore that, however.

And then you go on, telling me how completely wrong I am. Actually, to be fair, it is you that's taking the "holier-than-thou" attitude, and I'm tired of your personal attacks. Until you chimed on that issue, I didn't have a clue who you were. Later, when I mentioned the issue to others, I got pointed at other issues where you were being similarly obnoxious.

Your "You can't push me down" attitude may make sense to you, but it alienates everyone else quite quickly. As I said before, people who cannot follow the customs of a community get excluded from that community. You've expressly pissed all over all of our customs. You consistently try to tell us we're wrong when we answer your criticisms. You consistently demand these things without taking the time to understand the systems. Have you looked at the code? Nah, I doubt it. It's much easier to play the martyr, because we're being elitists and keeping the you down.

You can believe us elitists if you like. You can believe that I am being "holier than thou". But personal attacks on the drupal.org forums get people banned. That's the crux of the matter. Luckily for you, I don't have the power to ban you (that's funny, too, cause you probably think I'm the one who did it), because I find your personal attacks unacceptable. If you think your little holy war is acceptable behavior here, you're wrong.

In the end, we're people, trying to do work. As far as I can tell, you're just here to cause trouble. I'm sorry that we've allowed you to cause as much trouble as we have by even responding to you, but people can be quite passionate about the things they love.

If you seemed remotely interested in actually being a contributing member of the community, you'd probably get a fair amount of slack. But when people suggest you contribute, you mouth off to them.

I am finished with you. You can have the last word here (because I know your type, you won't be satisfied unless you have it), because I am no longer responding to issues with you. If I'm lucky, one of the administrators will again decide your behavior is obnoxious, and you will be banned again, along with your IP address. It's true, if you want to be a troublemaker, you can find ways around the bans. I'm sure you find that kind of thing fun. I found that kind of thing fun too...when I was 12.

The real world is full of adults, all with different passions and interests. Adults learn, very quickly, that communities have rules. If you don't abide by those rules, you are expelled from the community. You don't get to talk back to your teachers in high school. You don't get to talk back to senior management at your place of work. You don't get to tell the officers in a country club where to go. This online community is not any different. That's not elitism, that's simple social structure.

You haven't been banned yet. You still have the opportunity to become a member of the community. I'll put good money that you won't take it, just because you're the sort of person who likes to be contrary. It's a waste of time, but chances are, you don't have anything better to do either.

Oh, and one more thing: My explanation was embedded in there. Views sorts via SQL. If the sort is hard to do in SQL, the fields aren't sortable. Client-side sorting doesn't work very well if I'm showing you 25 records per page and there are 5 or 6 pages.

#21

Eep - July 18, 2007 - 04:07

Client-side sorting doesn't work very well if I'm showing you 25 records per page and there are 5 or 6 pages.

Uh, sure it does. Visit Wikipedia sometime and take a look at one of it's many sortable tables with 25+ rows per table. The RenderWare games list comes to mind (since I made it into a sortable table). It's really not that hard to implement client-side sorting to Views tables--in fact, I'll most likely end up doing it myself since the Views devs can't/won't implement it themselves...

You see, merlin, I never claimed to be a coder, and I'm sure as hell not going to bother looking over code I won't have a clue as to what does anyway, so for you to bring your pompous elitist geek coder attitude against me is ridiculous when I'm simply an end-user trying to do what I want with something that doesn't seem to be able to do it. Oh and this isn't your issue queue any more than it's anyone else's. Your passion for Views has obviously made you biased towards any criticism against it.

I can and have contributed quite well to communities that deserve it, but there are always a select elite view who are jealous of my contributions and end up playing the attitude/civility card as a copout. I'm not playing the martyr but martyrdom seems to play me--I just point it out when it does. <shrug> Yes, I'm blunt usually and, yes, I'm harsh. Too bad. That's who I am and I'm not about to change. However, I can be quite helpful and informative too--I've already helped people on this website by suggesting modules that can possibly do what they want, although I'm still new to Drupal and learning it, of course.

Now, to whoever banned my other account, I would appreciate it being restored so I can retain my issue/forum subscriptions...

"You see, merlin, I never claimed to be a coder, and I'm sure as hell not going to bother looking over code I won't have a clue as to what does anyway..."

...This is part of the problem. Drupal.org does expect that you read and understand code before you criticize it. Otherwise, you're free to make a feature request (of course), but you don't have the *right* to be harsh if you don't understand the code or how something works. Make polite suggestions. I don't code a lot either, but when I ask nicely people generally show me stuff :)

Of course, if you do understand the code and implementing something is as simple and useful as you claim, you're free to contribute code to the project. But MoC is right...there's no reason he should be responsible for explaining code to you when you (as stated above) refuse to spend time even reading / understanding it.

Simple disagreement: You think x is simple, he does not. He understands the code, you admit that you do not. You point to examples on Google and elsewhere, he doesn't think they're valid.

I see no reason for harshness in any of the above exchanges...it's just a disagreement. It happens. The logical next step is for you to understand the code so you understand his reasons before you criticize them.

You're not being blunt; when you criticize harshly while admitting that you do not understand (and have no intention of understanding) the thing that you are criticizing, well, people tend to get grumpy.

Dave.
