There is node.inc content type in core ctools. It has edit_form that gets displayed as step 2, after choosing node. Then there is my own custom content type that deals with nodes and it uses same form for editing.

What is the best way to set my defaults and get rid of step 2? If I use my own form, defaults are still being applied.
