Basically, it seems as if when both modules are turned on, the spam module impounds the offending comment before mollom has a chance to act on it. Not sure which should have precedence, if either. But with both installed, I had to turn the spam module off, and mollom on, before mollom could act.
Note: I only know this to be the case in mollom's 6.x-2.0 release of 2012-Apr-25. Not sure what release of the spam module is being used. Other releases, or Drupal versions, may vary.
