Drupal adds extra items to body tag, doesn't line break output html after move to new server

Hi,

I recently moved my drupal site to a new server. tar and mysqldump had no errors, permissions are all the same though the user ID # has changed on the new server. configured apache on the new server according to the standard instructions.

however, my theme (a modification of bluemarine) no longer works. themes/bluemarine/style.css is still picked up but the output HTML no longer includes line breaks or intelligent indenting of the HTML, it totally omits all mention of the site logo (which isn't displayed) and extra tags are included in the body tag that seem to be overriding style.css.

any suggestions? i found the guidelines in the troubleshooting FAQ in the administrator's guide for moving sites to new servers but they didn't cover anything like this.
