some of the commits are into the master branch and as a result don't make it into the dev version.
Any reason for this?

The master branch was initially used for the D6 version (when there was only a D6 version). D6 still uses the master branch and D7 the 7.x-1.x branch. Should be better to not use the master branch and create a 6.x-1.x branch however.. But it shouldn't be a problem. The commits on master are not intended for D7.

What is missing?

ok just found that out myself, got confused as found a D7 issue hansel_taxonomy.module doesn't work in localized Drupal and assumed was related to a commit that ended up being a D6 one :)

still not working with Taxonomy translate but that's another issue
