i can add the audio field and configure the player and it plays fine in my view; but the player is not visible (i don't actually want an entire player visible but i do need to be able to mute)

player is visible on the node view.

How are you building the view? Is it fields, audio, or some other style? It'd be helpful if you could upload and attach an export of your view, or better yet a feature with the view and content type.

i don't use features. view export is attached; although doubt it would be that useful

the view is simply an image field and an audio field; filtered to a single node. the image field has multiple images and it looks from the html source that the audio file is attached to each image (which i guess makes sense since i select to show each image in its own row); perhaps this is the reason the player doesn't show.
