Firstly great job on DrupalEd - our school has been waiting 6 months for a designer to produce a static site (still nothing) within a day we had DrupalEd up and running with a modded theme (which we intend to add back to the project if of interest) see the results at test area -http://nandrsteer.com/school.
One issue we have come accross is the best way of using groups and courses. Initially I set up Year based groups eg:
Year 1
Year 2
Year 3
with the idea that each pupil would join the relevant year group.
But then I realised that if the (say) Maths teacher wanted to set a homework assignment they would first need to create a course (say) 'Maths Year 2' and then create an assignment 'work with angles' - fine so far but when you wish to add (all year 2 pupils) you have to enter them manualy. I was hoping we could just put 'year 2' group but no luck.

I then tried OG subgroups but with no luck.

I wondered how others deal with this aspect?

There are a few ways of doing this, and the best way will depend on the specific types of grouping you are after --

One way of doing this is by role -- you could set up a role for year of graduation.

This can also be done by setting up course-specific groups, and having an open enrollment period where students sign themselves in, and after the enrollment period the courses are closed. You can mass-add users to a group by typing in a list of usernames, and this could be facilitated by using the profile_csv module to generate lists of students.

This could also be facilitated by using an enrollment key for specific groups -- there is a module for this whose name escapes me at present :|
