Search custom user fields

I'm trying to find out how to peform a search on custom user fields. Currently I can only see how to search users by username, not on the information in other fields. I've read some posts on this and some mention a user profile search module, but I can't find it. Can anyone help please. It seems like a funtion that many people would find useful.
