I can choose a picture from the selection and it shows but when I try to upload my own, I get a link instead of the picture.

Is this when you upload a picture to a user account? Or when you upload a picture to appear in the selection list? What is the url that is displayed? What are your file system settings? You can find these at "admin/settings/file-system".

Yes, sorry... it is when uploading a picture to a user account. My files settings are set to private with the path /home/*/files with /home/*/files/tmp as the temporary path.
