I have just returned to Drupal after a long break and all of a sudden I can't even seem to turn on the right hand sidebar and turn the left one off?!

Could anyone please tell me where I have gone wrong.

I can't get it to work with any of the pre-installed themes or my own custom theme.

Administer => Blocks

to delet everything from one side or the other either move everything to one side or deselect the ones you don't want to appear. Then hit save to see the results.

Still nothing changes, all the blocks are enabled and set to the RIGHT hand side in the blocks admin menu yet they still appear on the left hand side.

Scrap that, it appears to have worked now I have changed the theme about.
