On the site, information
On the site, information here is sometimes like jumping to the middle of a book. I'd suggest slow down and get something formal like this:

This is more on how to install and use Drupal in some different ways. Welcome!
Agree 100%
This is the book I used to learn Drupal. Great read and very informative.
Although it's a little out dated using Drupal 4.7, All of the major concepts are more or less the same. But it's important to play with a 4.7 install while reading this book, and then (maybe for practice) upgrade that install to 5.1 and learn the new layouts and stuff.

I only agree 25%
Whilst the Dave Mercer book is fine and gives a good overview, things have moved on somewhat. The best book now is Pro Drupal Development, BUT I'm making an assumption here - that you will actually be doing some drupal development, either modifying someone elses code or writing your own. If that's the case then you won't be needing Mr Mercer any more.
