On a site, running Drupal 5.1, I discovered, that certain Polish characters are not displayed (saved?) properly; e.g., the Ł/ł [1] is being replaced by an "?". The site is running Apache 2.2.3, PHP 5.2.0-8+etch7, and MySQL 5.0.32 on Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 "Etch". The Drupal database is - according to "systeminfo" module - confured for Charset "utf8", and Collation "utf8_general_ci"; the site's content is mostly in German, which is displayed properly (umlauts Ä/ä, Ö/ö, Ü/ü, ß), so I don'T quite understand what is going wrong.
I did some searching on drupal.org, and found two messages with similar problems; in one case, the reason was some misconfiguration at the ISP's side ("Fantastico"), in the other case, it was caused by the used theme. I'm neither at "Fantastico", nor am I using one of the problematic themes. I'm currently running "Slash", but switched back to the default themes to check if they use different fonts; the "?" instead of the "ł" remained.
The preview of this message shows, that drupal.org *can* handle polish caharacters:

The question is now, what I'm doing wrong. Should the Drupal database use Charset "utf8", or something else? Is there any "Howto" guide/manual/documentation for Drupal users utilizing non-7bit-characters?
To make this clear: I neither want to translate parts of the site into polish (core module "locale"), nor a fully multilingual site (i18n module), just to use some "foreign" language characters in a posting.

Since you've already ruled out the database and your theme, the only other thing I know to check is your browser. It's possible that it detects the UTF-8 encoding correctly for Drupal but not for your site. It is strange that the German characters display correctly but the Polish don't, though.

Where is being configured, what encoding Drupal is delivering to the browser? I've never seen such a seeting in Drupal (but it still keeps me suprising from never-before-seen setting from time to time ;)
The browser (Opera 9.21/Win) basically should have no problem with those Polish characters, at least it displayed them on drupal.org; also, it can display astonishing Unicode characters from MediaWiki sites (which might use different fonts), and delivers correct encodings for non-English content at least from one other Drupal site hosted on the same server and using the same theme. Since both sites are configured pretty similar, I'd be suprised if they'd differ in what encodings they deliver.

Hi all.
I have similar problem but in my case polish characters are displayed correctly but stored as "?" in database.
So when I move database to another server (or even the same computer) then all polish characters in menus, nodes, taxonomies etc. are messed up.
I won't move to Drupal until I solve this problem. Anyone have any suggestion?
My configuration is Drupal 5.2 (in Drupal 6 it's the same), Apache 2.2.4, PHP 4.4.7 and MySQL 5.0.41
