Thinking out loud- Profile fields which will filter site content

Is there a module out there/procedure to follow that would allow users to select a list of taxonomy tags on registration/when editing their profile which would then filter content on a site. So for example people who are only interested in items tagged Cats/moustaches/cats with moustaches will only ever see moustachioed cats?

I know this could be easily achieved using views filters but I like the idea of linking it with the user's profile.
