Tested this on a Drupal 5.1.

When creating a new node and editing it, clicking on the "Preview" button triggers PHPIDS. As a result, an error message appears in the PHPIDS log file and node editing is aborted.

Unless the user has access to the PHPIDS log files (default: no); all his page edits are gone.
