This is a small site, but with Drupal, this architect can edit his page content and photo-galleries all in one interface, instead of trying to use a myriad of confusing scripts.

Before we discovered Drupal, we tried to get clients to use Macromedia Contribute and even THAT was too difficult for most clients.
Drupal works for large and small...

He's using the image_gallery that comes with image module. You can do a view source on various pages for an idea of what modules are on. This is more difficult if they have css aggregation turned on.

Clean Urls
This is a shared server that I don't have access to the INI file. I have had some success with .htaccess but on this installation there were some issues and didn't have the budget to sort out on their server.
As far as clean URLS, our large site we built, http://www.blackpast.com, is doing marvelously in the search engines, holding the number one ranking is several google categories. and it does not use clean URLS.
And yes, using Image_galleries module which comes with IMAGE module. It's very easy to use. It's not feature laden, but it's also not bloatware, which is really nice. If you want a simple gallery. Use it!
