Description

I've been trying to set this feature up for a month, and I still can't. It seems like Multiple Domains module is the closest that I can get to a resolution, but I need your help.

Basically I need users to provide a name in certain field during registration (most probably NOT their username), and whatever they provide will be generated into example.domail.com

And the same thing for registration of OGs

I will keep the "username" for Real Name, and maybe use Alternate Login to appear in registration as a field that will become their subdomain.

Even though thousands of Users and hundred of OGs will have their pages, blogs and files appear as if in "their own" subdomain, this will all be still on the same single database.

Would you be so kind as to give me some directions as to how to modify Multiple Domains module so that it generates subdomains for users and OGs Automatically?

This is a feature request, of the type you're likely to need to hire a developer to produce.

This is something Wordpress MU supports and that works very well.

I wanted to replace my installation of Wordpress MU with Drupal and this could be the feature not just few people are interested in.

It should be core module, but community would appreciate add on as well.

Hi all ,
There is a new Subdomain module http://drupal.org/project/subdomain, which apparently does exactly this.

But I could never get it installed. Some kind of DNS wildcard must be in place and plus patching... and whatever brief documentation there was, it was all very obscure and way over my head.

If anyone can get their head around this please write to me, or post here. I'd be eternally grateful.

MacMladen -- I absolutely agree, this is a very important feature and should be given a lot of attention to.

As Drupalina suggested, you can use http://drupal.org/project/subdomain for this, putting this issue as 'won't fix'.
