I have a Drupal 4.7.0 site and also run civicrm 1.7. We use civicrm profiles to capture name, date of birth etc. Will the Birthday module work with civicrm profiles?

In the future, I'll try to make the 5.x version optionally use the birthday information of civicrm, as was requested earlier by someone else. But I won't do this explicitly for the 4.x version, as I don't have much knowledge about 4.x.
Someone else is free to update the 4.x version when the 5.x includes your wanted feature.

Just wondering if there had been any progress with the optional civicrm mode for 5.x? I really like the module but am thinking of moving over to civicrm as it appears pretty superior to the profiles module! Thanks in advance!

No, I haven't been working on it yet, and it is definitly not high on the todo-list. You might want to create a patch yourself and post it here.

Won't fix for 4.7. Will be in 5.x-2.0 or even 6.x-1.x
