I am using 7.x-2.0-beta1 version. Although I have set main menu items as expanded, there is no dropdown.

Have you installed the superfish module or one of the other modules that handles dropdown functionality? Superfish was included in 6.x version, but is its own module in 7.x.

It looks like I missed the superfish module. I think it should be noted as required in the README and web instructions.
