All variations for subproducts show up even if a product doesn't have that option

When creating subproduct variations (e.g. size, color), if a particular product only has one variation all variations show up on the node details for the product. For example, I have shirts that have size, and I have hats that have color. When viewing a shirt product node the variations will show size AND color even though the shirts were not setup with a color variation.

I know that eclive-subproducts will be replacing subproducts in EC-4.x, however I'm opening this issue and attaching my patch that resolves this issue for me in case it is decided to fix this issue in 3.x-dev and future 3.x releases. It's also here for people that need/want it.
