It is a difficult question. You might want a calendar of events. Check out Calendar module. You might want bios of members of the team, you will probably assemble them into team pages using Views module.

Any base theme can give any appearance you want, if you are going to customise, so choice of base theme is more connected with your technical preferences than the purpose of the site. If you want a ready-made theme I recommend the free and premium themes by Adaptive Theme, but that is a personal preference based on the fact they are well written more than on any particular visual result.
