It would be great to be able to chose which sorts are available based on which filters are engaged.

Do you see this as being within the scope of this module?

I've just posted a feature request about filter options at http://drupal.org/node/1693196. Is this the same request you have? (not sure if your "sorts" means the same as my "filter options").
