different home page vs. url aliases

I know that one can change the default home page from node to whatever.

But am I correct in thinking that the new home page is an alias for Drupal's default home page?

I am asking because when I changed the front page to point to something other than node, I couldn't find it in the urlaliases section.

I would appreciate some clarification.
