This patch adds an example image captcha on the settings page (in the help string). This makes it easier to evaluate the image captcha settings (font, dot noise, line noise, ....)

Well, if http://drupal.org/node/168694 (Reordering of captcha menu tabs) gets accepted, I would do both (providing an examples page and an example image captcha on image captcha settings page), because going from the image captcha settings page to the examples page is less obvious/more clicks (the examples page is 'hidden' when image captcha settings page is active).
Moreover, for most image captcha settings it's not that obvious in what they result without a visual example (e.g. "double vision", "add lines as noise", font choice).

Another solution is providing a link to the "10 image captcha examples page" from the image captcha settings page. But I'll wait to provide a patch for this after http://drupal.org/node/168694 is dealt with (because it changes the drupal path of the examples pages).

I actually like having this feature. Allows you to test the text image captcha without having to reload another page (the examples page). Good for when you're tweaking the look of it.
