I've got a bit of a unique requirement I think.
A site I'm working on has several subsections that contain news, events, and other content on a particular subject related to the sites main topic.
Users need to be able to either:
a) have the subsection(s) they are interested in assigned to them by an admin.
b) pick the subsection(s) they are interested in in their profile
Making things a bit more complicated, one of the member roles (a kind of junior member - membership on the site is paid only) can only have one subsection associated with it at any time. The other roles can pick and choose / have multiple subsections assigned as need be.
The purpose is to allow update emails to be sent out with content that the users are going to be interested in (i.e. tailored to their choice of subsection) as well as enabling access to forums associated with that section, and just showing in the members profile what they are interested in.
I'd really appreciate any insight you guys can give as to how to achieve this, as its the last big issue on this project. If I can solve this one it's just a matter of populating the site and I'm done! :-D

There is a User Tags module for assigning taxonomy to a user. There is also an Interests module that helps users build up an interests list. Check the Downloads tab above and then Modules. There is a list by category there; one of those categories is "Taxonomy."

Yeah I tried User Tags but it:
a) Threw a php error on the user profile page
b) From what I read it allowed users to free tag their profiles, rather than from a set? Could be wrong as I never got to use it ;-)
Interests sounds...erm...interesting though! I'll take a look. Thanks for your help :-)
Not quite
Yeah, Interests is cool, but its not quite right. Doesn't allow choosing of interests, just automatically assigns them according to what you visit, which is kind of the opposite of what I want.
Ta for the suggestion though, and I might use it on a future project as it sounds great for a social network thing.

My need is also for specified roles to assign taxonomy terms to users, and not necessarily allow users to change this. I'm looking to assign different types of status to users and thought this would be the module for that but not quite. If anyone has suggestions on how to do this, please let me know.
