i would love a featured that allowed the user to opt out of mailings based on the categorys. So the user would be presented with a list of categories in their profile and they can say, receive emails for these (or not these). For the groups, maybe it would just list the groups they belong to in addition to the categories.

I would like to second this, and to make it so for each list there was an option where if the people of are of the specific roles to be on a list, and if it was optional, then display a check box. Some mailing lists you want to be mandatory when the role is elevated, but when the list is say for all authenticated users, you may want that specific list to have the ability to opt out, but others to not be able to.

I would like to see this added to 6.x-1.x-dev, but I assume any features in 5.x-2.x-dev will be ported to the 6.x version.
