I have completely rewritten Node Image Block for Drupal 5.x, and included all features above and additional improvements.

Since the rewritten module has nothing more that the name and purpose in common with its predecessor, I will not check it in before I have a go from budda who wrote the original Node Image Block.

Meanwhile, Node Image Block 2 can be checked out from my sandbox. I have also attached it to this post.

I have released Node Image Block 2, with a completely rewritten code and many new features. It is released as version 5.x-2.x. See http://drupal.org/node/206044.
