The University of California, DC (UCDC) selected Fig Leaf Software, a leading Web design and Drupal development firm, to build and deploy their new public web presence using the open source content management system (CMS) Drupal. UCDC provided the design for this project.

UCDC Home Page
Why Drupal was chosen:

Drupal was chosen to reduce costs and to come in line with the University Web Platform Standards.

Describe the project (goals, requirements and outcome):

The newly designed site better organizes information for key audiences and enables departmental contributors to create and manage their own web pages. The topic based navigation menu was implemented using drop‐downs presented along the top of the content area, including links to external sites. Menu entries in this menu are managed through the standard drupal menu functionality.Menu settings are manageable through Drupal's menus and blocks admin areas.

UCDC required a simple search as well as document search for the new site content so Fig Leaf Software leveraged Acquia’s hosted search solution. Acquia search enabled the required functionality as well as more advanced sorting and sub-searching capabilities should that be required in the future. UCDC is using the Brightcove Video Cloud to host their many of their video and audio assets so Fig Leaf configured the system to leverage both audio and video Brightcove assets from within the Drupal CMS. This integration enables users to deploy videos within content pages as well as provide a way to aggregate video content by theme or topic directly within the CMS and present it within the website.

This is phase one of a full site migration from a custom developed Adobe ColdFusion based CMS to the Drupal platform. The University of California is standardizing on Drupal as a CMS and the new UCDC site complies with that mandate. Additional development and integration will be performed to provide students and visitors with a more seamless user experience.
