for days I am searching for the same answer, but couldn't find it yet.
a similar Featured Content sidebar has been created for New york observer website but there is no module for it in drupal's module center.

If you can't do it on your own, then the math will go like this:

how long to wait = as long as it takes for someone to release it, or write and release it.

has anyone taken a moment to contact the developers of the new york observer to inqure about how they did it? if they will be releasing a module?

Looking at the script it looks to me that this can be done using drupal_get_js or drupal_add_js calling the JS into a page or block. This may give you incentive and direction to DIY.

To be honest with you I am not a php programer so I don't have any knowledge regarding how they created it.

I didn't contact observer's developers because their answers is clear as far as they do commercial!
I couldn't find anyone in Iran for developing drupal module. if I had a team for it, a Persian drupal website would be lunched years ago.

basically you can use Views to out put an unordered html list and then feed it to this script

use views slideshow

You also have options to show teaser slideshow or fullnode slideshow.
If just just want to slide image, maybe can try CCK slideshow
