In joomla the have a module that the users of your site can add other users as friends. Can we do this with Drupal?

This is definitely do-able if you can find somebody with some free time; It shouldn't be too hard.

I would also advocate finding somebody to do this if it is not already done (I am not knowledgeable about all the contributed modules) rather than using Joomla. I recently helped set up a small site with Drupal and tweaked some things -- it was much easier to manage than Joomla, which had problems installing contributed modules and didn't have as good of an integrated and extensible framework for managing users.

I just want to get all my ducks in a row before I start building. Is there a way for them to search the users or browse the users. On other drupal sites I could not search the users or browse them. Once again thanks for helping.

The ability to search for users is probably linked to the "access user profiles" permission. Most sites I've seen have it turned off.

I'm not entirely sure how the buddy list works or what other modules you could add, however on the site I'm running each user has their own profile, which can be viewed directly by url. I also have all the profiles displayed as well as split into different categories/groups. You will also note a search feature on the site which allows you to search for user names or anything in their profile, as well as filtering that down to city based searching, either everyone in that city or everyone in that city with the search term you provide.

I imagine anything is possible, just learn a little about drupal, it's modules and some basic php and you should be able to do anything you want.
