As far as I know, this module doesn't work at all without jquery_update. Shouldn't it be included in the installation dependencies?

I agree, jquery_update should be a dependency. In fact at this time the Development Release of jquery_update is required because jquery 1.7 is required for Twitter Bootstrap to work fully and it is not included in the Recommended Release of jquery_update.
