Chris Pirillo Predicts Drupal Will Disappear
awakenedvoice - August 14, 2007 - 13:57
I just wrote a blog post titled How Long Will Drupal Be Around? in response to a post by tech blogger Chris Pirillo.
In Chris' post he laments the shortage of Drupal developers and even goes so far to state, "...I don’t think the platform will be around for too much longer."
Read my post to see my response. I thought it would be good to get a dialog going on this topic here as well though.

I've been a Lockergnome
I've been a Lockergnome subscriber since about 1997; Chris has been known to be wrong before on various topics from instant messaging to the Atkins diet :)
Not going anywhere soon
Chris should have taken the time to browse the web a bit more and he would have found that more and more websites are using Drupal. I also think it will be around for a long time to come. The growth on drupal.org (users and posts) is pretty awesome. If anything, its the Joomla crowd that should be worried ;)
PS. Rob, your signature has a comma in it, instead of a fullstop, after the www.

The significance of a bleat
The significance of a bleat from the blogosphere about our beloved Drupal notwithstanding, are we to deduce from the context of his prediction about Drupal's longevity ("We’re overcoming our software woes one day at a time, and I’m also learning that intelligent Drupal developers are in absolute short supply...") that he is having trouble in some fashion with Drupal and is frustrated by an apparent inability to get any help to resolve his difficulties? If not, how are we to understand what seems to me to be an erroneous observation?
What Defines Intelligent?
I just thought for a second about Pirillo's lament about the lack of "intelligent Drupal developers". I wonder what his definition of intelligent is? I think that people who are looking to hire Drupal (or any other kind of) talent need to be realistic about what can be accomplished well over short time spans.
I've dealt with a lot of customers in my time who want things done fast, cheap and perfect. Many don't realize that you can only expect to get two out of three if that's what you want.
So I'm left wondering what expectation was left unfulfilled. Was that expectation realistic?

Sooooo who is this Chris
Sooooo who is this Chris Prillo? And more to the point, why should I care what he thinks? Is he some sort of hard core Drupal contributor of which I (a relative Drupal newbie) am previously unaware?
...
He's just a random blog o sphere personality. Probably unhappy at not being able to find a Drupal developer to do something for him at what ever rates he's willing to pay. He has a conference, does talks, etc etc.

Chris Prillo is a tech
Chris Prillo is a tech evangelist that was on tech.tv / g4 back in the day. Now he blogs, does live video stuff, and is a common guest on twit.tv with Leo Laporte. Twit.tv was built by lullabot.com (a drupal development company) last year. The people at Lullabot strike me as intelligent people and I'm sure Leo would of recommended them to him. So with that said I wonder why he would make a comment like that.... maybe he wants cheap intelligent people - and if that is the case they are definitely hard to find.
Chris Pirillo
You may know Chris from his days with the great cable network TechTV (unfortunately now G4). He was the host of Call for Help, a tier-1 level tech support show. I never really liked the guy, and IMO, Leo Laporte and Patrick Norton of The Screensavers are much more knowledgable about the tech industry
