I don't know if you have seen it but the July 2012 issue of Linux Format magazine has a version of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS that has the following desktops built into it already:

Ubuntu (Unity)
Ubuntu 2D
KDE Plasma Workspace
XFCE Session
Xubuntu Session

It is 32bit only but by using this as the base, you would be automatically giving the end users a choice of which desktop to use when they log in to the system.

I don't know how hard it would be to put the DrupalPro environment on this but it would be a nice starting base.

I feel its too easy to install alternate desktops and the image would be too big if pre-installed. Worse of all it would make the virtual-machine (VM) slower.

For anyone interested in trying alternate desktops (such as Gnome Shell, LXDE, XFCE, or KDE), I suggest the following:

  1. Power down your VM
  2. Take a snapshot of you VM
  3. Restart your VM and then try some of the desktops in this article: I think it'll be click to install, if not, commands are there too.
  4. Later, you can revert back to the state of your snapshot, no harm done.
