soxofaan commentedI'm not a big fan of putting information in readme files. Readme files suffer too easily of software rot because they are rather obscure. We should provide as much information as possible in the web interface. Not only because this is easier to access (not a lot of people browse through the contents of tar balls), but also because it can be localized.
Moreover, I don't think the user has to download free fonts, any ttf-font will do (as long as (s)he respects the licence). Most operating systems come with a bunch of fonts nowadays.
But be welcome to provide some good pointers to free quality fonts (google returns 110.000.000 hits for a 'free font' query)

drewish commentedsoxofaan, put the links where ever you want. the readme is already there so it made sense to me to use it. either way i think a few links to fonts that would work well with captcha would be a very good idea. the problem with most free fonts is that they're too decorative and become impossible to read after the distortion is applied. it's just a matter of saving your users some time, why should each of them have to wade through a bunch of google searches when we could do it once and save them the time. if they don't like that font they're free to keep looking or upload something else.

soxofaan commentedSpeaking of software rot, That readme file is already outdated, because the image captcha also accepts fonts in the "files" directory.
I would choose to delete that readme, and put the necessary information on the captcha project page and in the help strings of the image captcha module.
This type of guidelines should be included too.
That's why it should be more visible than in a readme file.
Converning links, what about the following?
Dejavu: http://dejavu.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Download
Gentium: http://scripts.sil.org/cms/scripts/page.php?site_id=nrsi&item_id=Gentium
Liberation fonts: https://www.redhat.com/promo/fonts/

robloachI think that providing some links to get free fonts is a great idea, and those are some amazing resources for free fonts. How does this patch look?
GoofyX commentedDo the fonts have to be under GPL or not?
soxofaan commentedI don't think so. We are not (re)distributing the fonts themselves, only providing pointers to fonts.
GoofyX commentedRight. I had in mind that they will be distributed with Captcha.
I guess 2-3 pointers to fonts are enough. I use DejaVu and it's a very nice font.
robloachIf anyone finds any other resources to add there, now is the time to speak.
soxofaan commentedI have a lot more font resources, e.g.:
http://www.alvit.de/blog/article/20-best-license-free-official-fonts
http://www.josbuivenga.demon.nl/delicious.html
http://www.praegnanz.de/essays/
http://www.dafont.com/
http://betterfonts.com/
http://openfontlibrary.org/
But like GoofyX said: two or three should be enough. A decent site administrator should be able to google for free fonts by him/herself after all. So with that in mind we could maybe limit ourself to GPL-like fonts in order promote open source. I think the three examples from #4 fall in that category.

robloachYeah, I think you're right. Four should be enough.... Commit 78178.
