Is it possible somehow to replace the huge list of checkboxes for mandatory groups with an autocomplete field? I'm developing a site that will have 800 groups (schools within a network of schools), and want to require that users indicate their school upon registration.
Also, the ability to have new groups be available in the mandatory group subscription list on the registration page by default (rather than having to check it every time I create a new group) would be great as I'm going to have to enter in 800 groups!

Are you sure that this module will do what you want? Users will be assigned to the *one single* mandatory group. I think someone made a patch for multiple mandatory groups, but that still seems different that what you're trying to do.
You will probably need to develop something more specific to your needs.
