As panels becomes more important, the more critical it is to look at accessibility.
Most of the examples here are looking at D8, but there is Aria in D7 already. http://groups.drupal.org/node/242233
Would like to add landmarks and possibly some other aspects of aria - http://www.w3.org/WAI/intro/aria.php/

Everett Zufelt commentedWAI-ARIA is a powerful tool, but as with any other it is meant to be used to assist with reaching a desired outcome.
This might be a good meta issue, but can we identify the problems in Panels that WAI-ARIA may be able to solve?

mgiffordAs always, good question.
In my view, panels is in a very basic way just a way of organizing chunks of text. Like blocks, only much more so.
So as panels is being used to organize content in sidebars, navigation, search and various content areas, we should be encouraging content authors to describe appropriate landmark roles.
There are also a number of dynamic elements which probably present barriers to some users. Adding aria will help some users. Panel type interfaces are popping up everywhere these days.
