i've been using drupal for about 9 months and i cannot get autocomplete to work correctly when i use the keyboard on either IE 6 or FF 2.
For example, when i start typing in the "Author by:" field, autocomplete drops down a textfield with suggestions. However, when i try to use an down or up arrow key to highlight and select a suggestion, it doesn't allow me to. Using keys doesn't allow you to select any term in the drop down... It always bounce back up to the input field so you can NOT hit enter key on one of the items. If you hold the arrow key it cycles back and forth between any of the suggested options but you can't get it to ever rest on a suggested item. the minute you stop pressing the key it returns to the input field??????
If i use the mouse everything works fine?
this has been bothering me for a long time. it's probably a js conflict. i've tried disabling nice menus and any other module that could be conflicting.
Any ideas? which modules might be conflicting. any way to debug this. I want to fix it
** also what module provides the autocomplete functionality? it must be in core but is not explicitly specified.
thanks

soxofaan commentedI've never used Drupal's autocompletion with the mouse, I always use the arrow keys (up/down) and it works fine for me.
E.g. the search box on http://api.drupal.org/ works for me with Firefox 2.0.0.6 and Konqueror 3.5.5 (on Ubuntu Edgy)

newdru commentedOK.. so i just tested api.drupal.org per your suggestion. I still get the same behavior on both IE 6 and FF 2.
This eliminates the possibility that it has anything to do with my site implementations which helps a lot!
This would seem to confirm the problem is in the browser or my system (XP). I doubt it's the system
The only problem with the browser hypothesis is that i'm seeing identical behavior in two separate browsers. I would think the chances of that would be pretty slim.
Puzzled?????
thanks for the input.

soxofaan commentedDo you have some non typical keyboard or something?
Do other Javascript/Ajax sites work?
Can you try other computers in your neighbourhood?
You can also try out opera as browser (http://www.opera.com/)

newdru commentedi get the same behavior in opera, ie, ff.. it does NOT work.
my kb is listed as being standard 101/102-key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard. That's pretty standard.
I will try this on a laptop and from another house / nw.
Something tells me it has something to do with this system i'm using???
Utterly perplexed.
