There is a translation group for Persian Farsi already: http://localize.drupal.org/translate/languages/fa . Is that for Iranian Persian? NO. Afghanistan Persian has it's own variation
Language code: http://rishida.net/utils/subtags/index.php?check=fa-af&submit=Check recommends to not use fa-af, but to use pes or prs instead. prs is listed as the tag for Afghan Persian. So it seems prs would be the most correct language code. Do you agree? Follwoign ISO standards, FA=Farsi, AF=Afghanistan
Language name: http://rishida.net/utils/subtags/index.php?lookup=pes%20prs%20&submit=Lo... gives the name as Dari, Afghan Persian. http://www.ethnologue.com/show_language.asp?code=prs says Farsi, Eastern. Several other sites (may less reliable ones?) say Dari. What would be the most correct name for the language?

http://translate.sourceforge.net/wiki/l10n/pluralforms says the plural formula for Farsi is nplurals=1; plural=0. Is that correct for this language Yes

zirvap commentedThanks, that's all clear except for the language code. As far as I can tell, FA-AF is correct according to ISO 639-1, while PRS is correct aggording to ISO 639-3, which is a newer standard. (Source http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persian_language and various links from there.)
Can anyone else here help out? I would expect that the newest code is better, but the old one may be more widely used, for all I know.

The name would be "Afghanistan Persian" and language code prs
It should be simple. British English, Canadian English, Australian English so Afghanistan Persian.

zirvap commentedI've created the team at http://localize.drupal.org/languages/prs and made @barnamah the initial owner / admin. You can add any number of other admins and manage group level permissions of people.
Note: When I created the language, I used "Afghan Persian" as English language name instead of "Afghanistan Persian", as that's what's used on http://www.ethnologue.com/language/prs. I also needed the Afghan Persian name of the language, and took the chance of copying it from Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dari_%28Persian_dialect%29):

When you go to http://localize.drupal.org/translate/languages/prs/board you'll see that I named the group "Afghan Persian (Dari) team". You can change that by choosing the "Edit group" link in the sidebar.
Please report issues as you find them! Your team members can now join and help import existing translations and work on more translations. Anybody can sign up for being a member of the team and they will be able to submit suggestions right away. The initial admin can change permissions of people signing up, widening their capabilities. See http://localize.drupal.org/node/616 for explanation on how. It is highly suggested to grant both moderation permissions to those who you also designate admins.

I have grown up in Afghanistan and studied at a university there. Currently studying at a university here in Canada.
Afghan Persian is incorrect because the word "Afghan" is referring to specific ethnic whom speak "Pashto" in Afghanistan. (they will have Afghanistan Pashto and Pakistan Pashto). So Afghanistan Persian is the most appropriate name because it includes all ethnics whom speak Persian in Afghanistan.

zirvap commentedNormally, I'd stick to the language names given in more-or-less officical sources like http://rishida.net/utils/subtags/index.php?find=Persian&submit=Find and http://www.ethnologue.com/language/prs , but your explanation makes sense to me, and I assume such sources might miss important cultural nuances. I've renamed the language to "Afghanistan Persian".
I haven't renamed the translation group, you can do that yourself by editing the group (see description in my last post).

zirvap commentedYou go to http://localize.drupal.org/translate/languages/prs , then click on the "Translate" tab.
Now you can simply write in translations to the strings you see there, but you'll probably want to start with the most important strings first. In "Project" you can write the module you want to translate, or "Drupal core". Then you will see all releases in the "Release" box, so you can choose the newest. When you've done that, click on the "Filter" button to get the strings you're looking for.
That's still a lot of strings, so click on the link "Reveal more filters" and add some text in in the "Contains" box, to find specific strings. Try out the other filters as well, there are lots that can be useful.
When you have found strings you want to translate, write the translation in the box marked <New translation>, click on the radio button in front of the translation, and click "Save changes".
If you forget to click on that radio button, or if a translation is submitted by someone else who doesn't have full permissions to translate, the translation will be saved as a suggestion. To approve suggestions, simply click on the radio button in front of it, and click "Save changes".
