I've never placed a block in a node before, what's the best way to do so?

The best way to have a block shown with a node is to set the block to only be shown when the node is displayed in the block configuration. If you wanted, you can even go to http://drupal.org/node/29139 and follow the guide on how to add custom regions for your template. Making the module able to display as a node as well as a block maybe something to do down the road.

see... this is where I think I might be confused and not even know it or it went right over my head

I was thinking of setting it somewhere between 400 and 500px wide. And at that width, I can't see it being anything else but a node. Top, bottom, left or right - that kind width will mess everything up.

Please excuse me if I'm missing something obvious here. I have this odd feeling I'm not understanding something.

I really like the way it expands and shrinks - very smooth and slick operation.

I just used LiteJazz Theme ... visible on this page only :-)
