Looking for good File Sharing CMS: is Drupal it?
Hi, I use a popular CAD (Computer Aided Design) application and I'm looking into the possibility of creating a website for sharing resources for this particular application.
What I think I need is:
- Something that is looks pretty sleek, is non-geeky and easy to use (think Web 2/Mac OS X, as opposed to Linux/Windows type thing)
- Very easy upload and download capability (on a par with the likes of Flickr.com, except not just for images)
- Ability to choose a licence when uploading (such as a Creative Commons licence, like you can when uploading to Flickr.com)
- Ability to manage/admin uploaded files easily (e.g. ability to vet them before going live for instance)
- Maybe the ability to sell of files through the website, although I'm mainly looking into doing this because I want to help foster more of an open sharing culture (for this particular app).
- And, if possible, the ability to avoid lots of bandwidth somehow, say by integrating into the BitTorrent system somehow.
Can I make a website like this with Drupal? Easily? If so, do you know of any examples? If not, can you offer any advice on alternatives?
Thanks for your help.

Oh yeah, and possibly WebDAV
Oh yeah, and possibly WebDAV support.

Hi again, has anyone got any comments on this? I was under the impression the Drupal community was quite active. Maybe I shot myself in the foot by replying to my own thread?

The drupal community is very active-- but as with any forums, not every post gets a response. Personally, this is the first I've seen this one and i'm in the forums ALOT.
In any case, here you go:
Drupal will look as sleek as you make it. Everything is themable. Usability is also something that will be a function of your design/implementation more than anything else.
Built-in with the core 'upload' module though there are other contributed modules (like filefield) that offer additional/enhanced functionality.
see the http://drupal.org/project/copyright module
With core drupal files can be attached to nodes that are 'unpublished' by default. Any users you assign the 'administer nodes' permission can then publish them. There's also contributed modules (like modr8) that provide additional/enhanced functionality for this as well. You can also do complex workflows with the rules module.
There are 2 well supported full featured ecommerce solutions: the ubercart and ecommerce modules.
I've never used it, but there is a http://drupal.org/project/bittorrent module. Also the media_mover and amazon s3 related modules might worth a look as well.
