As I understand, only the admin can assign account types to roles. Couldn't the user choose its role ?
Thx

You've got it backwards. Roles are assigned to account types, not account types are assigned to roles.

But yes, a user must have both the 'administer users' and 'administer access control' permissions to assign either account types or roles to users. Otherwise, in the user edit screen, neither of these form sections will even appear.

A separate permission 'administer accounttypes' is needed to setup account types and the roles that belong to them. This way, user 1 could setup the account types, but delegate user administration.

Anyway, what it sounds like you are after is this module: http://drupal.org/project/nf_registration_mod

All account types does is make it so an employee/volunteer that is in charge of user maintenance can't assign someone the wrong role.

Thank you for your answer.
nf_registration_mod is the module I'm searching for.
