Hi Everybody,
so I wanted clean urls. Went to Configure>Clean URLs and did not get the enable or disable button. Ran the clean URLs test and message told me: Clean URL test failed. check online handbook, etc. So I checked the online handbook and was referred to my .htaccess file. Well my .htaccess file looked fine to me. So that couldn't be it.
I googled some more. Did stuff to my .htaccess file which led me to have a white screen of death. Luckily I had a back up of my site.
So I restored my site from backup.

Solved the clean URLs failed thing
The answer to this is easy and simple.
Please excuse my simple instructions. I am a semi-newbie too. And I still speak in newbie lingo.
Log into your site. Go to your admin>Configuration>Clean URLs. Then type into the url box in your browser (not server) at the very top:
admin/config/search/clean-urls (copy and paste this if you like into your url search box of your browser). Remember that it is still example.com/admin/config/search/clean-urls. Hit enter or search.
Now you should be able to get the "enable clean urls " button.
This works if you have Apache server and got the "Run Clean URLs test message" and after that got the Failure message.
Try it.
It worked for me, and now I have clean urls.
Good Luck, I hope this helps you too.
P.S. Thank you to mudtraining on http://drupal.org/node/944080 comment #15.

Hi, I am using apache server. I followed your simple steps but it dint worked.. I have the same problem with clean-urls. Do you have any other solution ? Thanks
Any update?
Is there any update on this, not sure what to do?
Also this is all thats in my .htaccess file:
SetHandler Drupal_Security_Do_Not_Remove_See_SA_2006_006
Options None
Options +FollowSymLinks
Any solution to fix my clean URLs would be great - I tried #1 but going to that link didn't work either

to ramaraju_d
what error message do you get?
_
This worked for me.
1) Did you run the test before trying to insert the link?
2) Did you clear your browser cache before trying the link again?
nope
thought it worked but instead broke DB - back to the drawing board
