By disabling 3d acceleration in virtualbox, unity works correctly in 2d mode.
My graphic card is an ATI radeon X1250 included in the chipset of my motherboard.

reinstalling virtualbox guest additions might do the trick, too. But yes, Ubuntu 2D may work better on some installations... and possibly snappier.

As an option to reinstall Guest Additions, try

  • Start DrupalPro
  • Logout,
  • Then choose Ubuntu 2D from the round Ubuntu icon (menu dropdown) near the login, and login as
    • user: drupalpro
    • pwd: drupalpro
  • Once back in Ubuntu Desktop, open the VitrualBox menu > Devices > Install Guest Additions ... Follow the directions. If all goes well, it should just take a little time to reinstall.
  • Then reboot, logout, and Choose Ubuntu 3D.

Reccomendation: I'd suggest you should change your Ubuntu user password to something other than drupalpro :-)

Thank you for your answer. But I finally to decide to buy a new computer, mine was becoming slow for virtual machine.
So now i'm now with intel I7 3770 with motherboard with chipset H77. I thought i would have enjoyed this time of unity in 3D, but still not the case :-(
I installed as you preconised the guest additions.
When 3d acceleration is enabled, and i'm in full screen, the display of ubuntu is completly freezing. In window mode, unity is not freezing, but I really don't see the difference with ubuntu 2D.
I have the felling that it is a virtualbox bug.

I resolved all my issues related to fullscreen mode with 3d acceleration enabled with unity 3d.

first you need to install compizconfig-settings-manager using sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager.

Then in Preferences->Compizconfig-settings-manager look for Utility. And then 'check' the workaround item. Finally in the settings for the workaround item, look for 'Force fullscreen redraws (buffer swap) on repaint' and check this option. Thats it!

Great to hear! What a pain! I haven't personally run into this problem of full-screen vs. windowed ... but I also often run 2D just because it feels a bit snappier -- but still, since the release of VirtualBox 4.1.16 was released (which had a lot of 3D patches), I haven't had any 3D problems.
