There's another very similar module, called Safeword. It provides a machine name with a title field, allowing it to replace things such as a Title filed with a URL-safe "short" version that's used to build path aliases. I propose learning from both modules and perhaps merging the features into a single module. :)

safeword offers nice custom settings for the machine name value such as max length, regex, and whether the machine name can be changed. machine_name does not offer any afaict. I'm attaching a screenshot of the field settings.

Related: #1748532: Add ability for field to act more like FAPI implementation.... That seems to move this module even more in the direction of what safeword provides. I just marked it postponed pending the outcome over here.

Personally, I'm all in favor of merging and reducing "Druplication" whenever possible. It's sad that beejeebus and hunmonk didn't find safeword in the first place and ended up writing a subset of it here. Blame it on the difficulties of finding modules on d.o. :/

However, my concerns include:

A) A lot of the D7 port of Project* is already written to use machinename and that stuff would have to be redone. We don't have time for such rewrites at this point.

B) It looks like safeword is trying to do more than what machinename does and I don't think we need the additional functionality.

C) The maintainer (eaton) is certainly a rockstar in the community, but he pushed a single commit for the project, created the project node, and then hasn't participated in a single issue in the issue queue. Ever. ;) So, it doesn't strike me as a particularly actively maintained module.

Well, that settles it then. We're going with machinename for Drupal.org D7-1.0 instead of safeword.

It appears that Safeword is not going to merge: see #1706880: This is similar to a Machine Name module.
It looks like it takes a bit different approach (see comment of its maintainer) - so let's not be stuck by this anymore.
@Machine Name maintainers Could you please consider putting to the project main page a link to Safeword project? I've requested the same from Safeword together with clarifying the difference between modules.
