It'd be nice to easily wrap the icon shown for a file in Views with a link to the file.

Could we extend filefield_handler_field_icon from views_handler_field_file (instead of views_handler_field) to get that "Link this field to download the file" option?

Unfortunately this functionality does not exist in Drupal 7, so adding it results in a feature regression for upgrading users. If a similar feature were introduced into Drupal 7 core, I would take the backport here, but I think it's unlikely at this point that such a feature would be added to D7.
