As a part of the Content Staging Initiative, a centralized info area has been added to allow workflow modules to present state data in a centralized area. See http://drupal.org/project/iib. The functionality is very similar to current messages functionality. IIB is in many ways based on the needs of workbench. It essentially just provides a centralized location for workflow / site state related modules to provide users with information and interactive forms.
