Create Digg Like Site With Pics

im imtrying to create a digg like site but had no luck following install guide of vote updown module and other stuff. i was wondering is the install guide in the module is just for 4.7? cause im using the 5.2 version of drupal. due to the fact that the module is already ported to 5version of drupal. i saw thread in the forum about this site (http://www.xequae.com/) which is somewhat i like. but i want to have an image beside the article preferrably in the left site.

how can i make a site like that using drupal. im new to drupal. been using joomla for a year now but i was fascinated by drupal capabilities.

i hope someone can help me. im trying also pligg but had no luck in the image part.
